FEATURING PARTICIPATION IN THE LISBON INTERNATIONAL 

 

July 6 – July , 2019


Day 1 – Saturday July 6, 2019


3:00pm - arrive at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport – Terminal 3 and check in with an Ellison


6:40pm - scheduled departure: Air Transat Flt 378 departs Toronto for Lisbon, Portugal (Non Stop

Service – estimated flight time is 7 hours) Inflight meal service is provided – timing of inflight

meal service is left to the discretion of the cabin crew




Day 2 – Sunday July 7, 2019 (Arrival in Lisbon, Portugal) M/D


- breakfast is served just prior to landing


6:40am - scheduled arrival: TS378 lands at Lisbon’s Portela International Airport

- clear Customs and proceed to the Baggage Claim Area to collect your luggage


8:00am - proceed to the front of the terminal where you will be met by your Lisbon International Youth


Music Fest Tour Manager who will remain with you for the remainder of the trip


8:15am - 2 – 47 passenger motor coaches with drivers arrive in front of the Terminal to load luggage

- board coach and transfer into downtown Lisbon where you will enjoy a ½ day tour manager

directed introductory guided city tour of one of the most charismatic and vibrant cities in

Europe, effortlessly blending traditional heritage with striking modernism

highlights of today’s tour include Restauradores Square, Rossio Square, Augusta Street

Comercio Square, Old Cathedral, St. Luzia or Castelo Lookout, St. Jorge Castle (admissions are

not included)


12:15pm - at the conclusion of your tour you will have time to purchase lunch and explore the downtown

area independently before heading over to your hotel


3:00pm - late afternoon arrival at Real Oeiras Hotel - Lisbon where you will check in for 7 night’s

accommodation – take time to settle in, freshen up and rest before dinner


6:30pm - enjoy a 3 course welcome dinner either at your hotel or at a nearby restaurant


8:30pm - after dinner the remainder of the evening is yours to spend as you wish - suggest an early night

after a long couple of travel days




Day 3 – Monday July 8, 2019 (Optional Rehearsal PLUS Beach Day at Costa da Caparica ) B/D


8:30am - Continental breakfast included at the hotel


9:30am - SUGGESTION: tentative to approval by Sudbury Youth Orchestra Music Director and subject to

availability and confirmation by the hotel group reservations department: optional Orchestra

Rehearsal at the hotel (rehearsal room rental fee is NOT included in the overall package price –

fees to be advised)

OR - spend the morning exploring Lisbon and follow individual pursuits in chaperoned groups –

private motorcoach service is provided for today if required, admission to suggested activity (if

applicable) is not included)

- OPTIONAL SIGHTSEEING SUGGESTION: visit the historic Manueline Monteiro dos Jerónimos, a

UNESCO World Heritage site, built in 1502 located in nearby Belem - one of the most

prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture (admission

tickets NOT included)


12:00noon - board your coach at the hotel and depart for Costa da Caparica Beach - a lively and modern

resort town that is adored by the Portuguese, but virtually unknown by foreign tourists…it’s

coastline is simply stunning, and is famed for its vast sandy beach, powerful surfing seas and

wonderful natural scenery, all of which is less than a 20-minute drive from central Lisbon).


12:30pm - upon arrival take time to purchase lunch and then it’s time to hit the beach – enjoy the afternoon


4:30pm - meet your coach and return to Lisbon – time is allowed for group members to return to the

hotel and freshen up before dinner


6:30pm - group dinner is included tonight followed by an evening at leisure




Day 4 – Tuesday July 9, 2019 (Lisbon– Performance Day) B/D


8:30am - Continental breakfast included at the hotel


9:30am - Festival Tour Manager arrives at the hotel with Motorcoach and Driver – board coach and

depart for Lisbon’s delightful Belem District – located to the west of central Lisbon, it is the

setting for many of the capital’s most iconic and important museums and attractions including

Belem Tower – the landmark medieval defensive tower, The Monument to Discoveries, and the

Monastery of Jeronimos (admissions where required are not included)


- time to purchase lunch followed by an afternoon at leisure to explore the area independently


- meet motorcoach at a predetermined location and return to your hotel to freshen up and

change for tonight’s performance


- board coach and depart for tonight’s performance venue “Convento do Carmo” (Our Lady of

Mount Carmel) who’s ruins soar high above the Lisbon skyline


- these captivating skeletal remnants are all that remain of what was once Lisbon’s largest

Catholic Church – on November 1, 1755 it was destroyed, along with most of Lisbon city

proper, by a devastating earthquake – today the iconic site provides a stunning back drop for

performance ensembles from all over the world


6:30pm - Stage Set Up & Rehearsal


7:30pm - enjoy a 3 course dinner at a nearby restaurant


9:30pm - 90 minute performance featuring the Sudbury Youth Orchestra presented as part of the 2019 

Lisbon International Youth Music Fest Concert Series


11:00pm - at the conclusion of the concert, pack up your musical instruments and load onto the coach


11:15pm - board coach and return to your hotel for overnight accommodation




Day 5 – Wednesday July 10, 2019 (Day Trip to Sintra and Cascais) B/D


8:30am - Continental breakfast included at the hotel


10:00am - Festival Tour Manager arrives at the hotel with Motorcoach and Driver – board coach and

depart for Sintra, a UNSESCO World Heritage Site, located in the foothills of Portugal’s Sintra

Mountains


- a long time royal sanctuary, Sintra’s forested terrain is studded with pastel-colored villas and

palaces. The Moorish- and Manueline-style Sintra National Palace is distinguished by dramatic

twin chimneys and elaborate tilework. The 19th-century hilltop Pena National Palace is known

for its whimsical design and the sweeping views it offers


- purchase lunch in Sintra


- after lunch board coach and depart for Cabo de Roca, which is the western most point of

Continental Europe


- a stop will be made at Praia do Guincho which is located on the western edge of the Serra da

Sintra National Park an area which is protected from future modern development – this beach

area is known primarily for the crashing waves that roll in from the Atlantic Ocean which

makes it very popular with surfers or kite boarders


- today’s final stop will be in Cascais where the group will enjoy a group dinner in a local

restaurant


- after dinner return to Lisbon for overnight accommodation – estimated time of arrival:

Day 6 – Thursday July 11, 2019 (Lisbon - Day Trip to Évora – Performance Day) B/D


9:30am - continental breakfast is included at the hotel

- free time this morning to explore Lisbon in chaperoned groups


12:30pm - time to purchase lunch before setting off for Évora

2:00pm - meet your Festival Tour Manager in the lobby of the hotel and board locally hired motorcoach


and depart for the Alentejo Region


3:30pm - today you will visit the town of Évora, which is known as a “Museum-Town” and designated as


a UNESCO World Heritage Site (estimated drive time is 90 minutes)

- upon arrival in Évora enjoy a guided tour of this lovely historic centre featuring a number of

wonderful monuments such as the Temple of Diana, which dates back to the 2 nd century, the

Loios Convent (15 th century) and the Cathedral (13 th century) – time to purchase lunch and

spend the afternoon exploring the town


7:00pm - Stage Rehearsal for tonight’s performance at Praça do Giraldo (Geraldo Square) which is

Evora’s Main Square


- historic Praça do Giraldo is named after folk hero, Giraldo Sem Pavor, who aided Alfonso

Henriques in expelling the Moors from the Alentejo region in 1170 – this is also where the

treasonous Duke of Braganza met his end in 1484 and where the Portuguese Spanish

Inquisitions took place in the 16thCentury


7:45pm - enjoy a 3 course dinner at a local restaurant in Evora


10:00pm - 90 minute performance featuring the Sudbury Youth Orchestra presented as part of the 2019

Lisbon International Youth Music Fest Concert Series


11:30pm - at the conclusion of the performance, load musical equipment onto coach and return to Lisbon

for overnight accommodation


1:00am estimated time of arrival in Lisbon at the hotel – retire to your rooms for the night




Day 7 – Friday July 12, 2019 (Lisbon) B/D


8:30am - continental breakfast is included at the hotel


9:30am - this morning is yours to explore the City of Lisbon on an independent basis in your chaperone

groups revisiting some of the places highlighted in your earlier guided tours

retail therapy suggestion: The Vasco da Gama Shopping Centre: featuring a unique glass ceiling

and features 170 stores, including 33 restaurants, 6 cinema screens, a Health Club and various

Customer Service options.


1:00pm - time to purchase lunch from a nearby restaurant

2:30pm - arrive at Palacio da Ajuda (former residence of the last Portuguese Royal Family) where you

will set up your equipment and rehearse for this afternoon’s concert


4:00pm - 90 minute performance featuring the Sudbury Youth Orchestra (and possibly other

ensembles) presented as part of the 2019 Lisbon International Youth Music Fest Concert

Series


5:30pm - at the conclusion of the concert pack up your equipment and load onto the coach and return

to the hotel to freshen up and change for dinner


7:00pm - enjoy a group dinner at a nearby restaurant


9:00pm - board coach for the return trip back to the hotel, suggest organizing your suitcase




Day 8 – Saturday July 13, 2019 (Day Trip to Arrabida Region) B


- continental breakfast is included at the hotel


9:00am - meet your Festival Tour Manager in the lobby of the hotel and board locally hired motorcoach

and depart for the Arrabida Region, located south of Lisbon, this is considered one of the most

beautiful regions in all of Portugal (admissions where required are NOT included)


10:00am - Palmela Castle stands at an altitude of 1,200 metres and provides panoramic views of the

Serra da Arrabida, the vineyards below and the Tagus and Sado Rivers…in good weather it is

even possible to see Lisbon around 40km to the north


- it is thought that the Romans had a settlement here first and then the Moors who later

occupied this region, built a fortress here around the 8th century…by the 12th century the

Islamic forces had been driven out and from then until 15th century the castle served as an

important Portuguese military stronghold


11:15am - Cabo Espichel is a windswept, rocky headland at the south-western tip of the land across the

Tejo… a wild, desolate spot, where giant waves crash against sheer, towering cliffs…there has

been a lighthouse situated here since the 15th century, and today a white, hexagonal

lighthouse built in 1790 is still operational, beaming out a light and sounding a siren which

warns ships of the treacherous waters and rocks below.


12:30pm - Sesimbra – spend the remainder of the afternoon in this bustling resort town, which is

considered one of the finest in Portugal…it is adored by the Portuguese, for its pristine

coastline and white sandy beaches....time to purchase lunch from one of the beach side cafés

and enjoy some beach time this afternoon – public washroom and shower facilities are

available / open on the beach until late afternoon


5:00pm - re-board your coach and return to Lisbon


5:45pm - estimated time of arrival at your hotel where you will have time to quickly freshen up and

change before heading off to dinner


7:00pm - transfer to tonight’s farewell dinner location


7:30pm - attend the Lisbon International Youth Music Fest’s farewell dinner


11:30pm - at the conclusion of the night, board your coach and return to the hotel for overnight

accommodation


12:00am - upon arrival at the hotel retire to your rooms for the night, recommend finishing packing

tonight as you have a VERY early departure for the airport tomorrow morning




Day 9 – Sunday July 14, 2019 (Flight Home) pB/M


- collect packed breakfast (on request but not confirmed) at the hotel followed by check out

and loading of the coach


- board coach and transfer to Lisbon’s Portela International Airport


5:20am - arrive at Lisbon’s Portela International Airport and proceed to the Air Transat Ticket Counter

to check in for your trans-Atlantic flight (groups travelling on International Routes are required

to check in 3 hours PRIOR to your scheduled departure time)


8:20am - scheduled departure: Air Transat Flt 379 departs Lisbon, Portugal for Toronto, ON (Non Stop

Service estimated flight time is 8 hours & 10 minutes) inflight meal service provided


11:30am - scheduled arrival: TS Flt 379 lands at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport – Terminal 3


- clear Customs and proceed to the Baggage Claim Area to collect your luggage
