SYO is celebrating our 50th anniversary!

Happy 50th SYO!

Celebrate with the Sudbury Youth Orchestra as they commemorate fifty years of music making.

Their 50th anniversary spring concert will take place on Sunday, May 7th, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Place, 111 Larch Street, Sudbury, admission by donation. The concert will feature a specially commissioned work by Indigenous composer and former SYO musician J. Alex Young and a wide variety of the favourite pieces of musicians and audiences performed over the decades.

Audience members are invited to a reception following the concert where there will be the opportunity to browse memorabilia from the orchestra’s fifty-year history.

2021-2022 Events

Thank you to Rebecca Salazar for your contribution of poetry to our Northern Dreams concert.

We were delighted to present the work of Rebecca Salazar, a former cellist with the Sudbury Youth Orchestra, whose poetry collection, sulphurtongue, was shortlisted for the 2021 Governor General’s Award for English-language poetry. Rebecca read excerpts from that volume.

Originally from Sudbury, Rebecca is currently based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where she is a doctoral student at the University of New Brunswick. She previously published the collections Guzzle (2016) and the knife you need to justify the wound (2018).

Rebecca’s work was winner of the Open Season Poetry Award (2015), and The RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers (2019). She also made the longlist for the Pat Lowther Memorial Award and the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award.

Thanks for a great season!
